“I hate reading!” “But it’s SO boring!”
Sound familiar? Ready to give up? Have you been telling yourself, “Maybe, it’s just not his thing. ” or “Well, she IS a left brain learner…” ? Well, we hate to break it to you but…. reading is—sorry—fundamental. Unfortunately, some kids would prefer sky diving to Harry Potter, but you know (as the wise adult that you are) reading is not merely a hobby. It is a life-skill! So, don’t get frustrated, get clever. If people can sneak carrots and broccoli into brownies, you can coax your child into reading a book or two.
1. Connect it to their passions— Reading about what you like or are interested in is far more enjoyable than forced assignments.
2. Share the load—Reading with your child models an interest in reading and gives you some quality time together.
3. Don’t just read fiction—Some kids like to learn about science, real people, and history. How-to books are also ways to realistically show the value of reading.
4. DON’T LOSE YOUR TEMPER— you definitely want to avoid making reading a bad experience. Even if it pains you to see your child turn up their nose at a chapter book, keep trying! You can require them to read, but make sure they get to choose the book, or time, even where they get to read.
