Helping your child become a stronger reader, or even like reading is an attitude that parents have the power to influence.
- Start early. Womb early. Reading to babies before birth helps them recognize your voice. At this time, reading aloud is also practice for parents. Get into the habit of talking and sharing stories with your little one.
- Talk to Your Child. Babies imitate the sounds they hear. Giving them different sounds to toy with mentally stretches their minds and builds a solid language foundation.
- Read to/with your child for 30 mins a day. This does not have to be done in one sitting. If he or she gets restless or sleepy, stop reading. This will help build a positive experience.
- Create a reading corner. Buy fluffy pillows and a comfy beanbag. Learn about your child’s interests and stock the area with corresponding fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, a timer, crayons, pencils and paper.
- Supplement his reading with movies. Don’t forget discussion! So many books don’t line up with the movie. It’s good to talk about the differences and similarities as well as your likes and dislikes.
