Learning Like a 2nd Grader, Part I

Though classrooms differ from state to state, your child will learn a lot of universal reading and writing facts, practices, and rules. By the end of second grade, your child should be able to answer the following questions.

  • What happened in the story? (summarizing)
  • What is the main idea? What are the details?
  • What is a subject? Verb? Adjective?
  • What happened first? What happened last? (sequencing)
  • What caused X to happen? What is the effect of X?

Practice at home-- After reading a story, talk about these questions with your child. This will give them another opportunity to remember what they’ve learned.
